Act 2 Scene 3

Characters: a porter, Macduff, Lenox, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, Donalbain, Malcolm

Location: A courtyard within Macbeth’s castle

Events: The castle porter opens the door who imagines himself as the porter of hell gate, welcoming sinners. He lets in Macduff and Lenox and makes jokes to them about the effects of alcohol. Macbeth walks in and shows Macduff where Duncan is “sleeping” as Lenox describes the strange events and weather of last night. Macduff cries out in horror at the discovery that Duncan has been murdered. As Lenox and Macbeth go to see for themselves, Lady Macbeth enters.

Quote: ” The night has been unruly: where we lay, our chimneys were blown down; and, as they say, lamentings heard i’ the air; strange screams of death”

This quote has been said by Lenox and is a metaphor because in shakespearian times weather was connected with god and so if someone had sinned they thought that the weather would actually change. In this sentance murder is mentioned, which is interesting because Macbeth has killed Duncan but Lenox, as many of the other people, do not know about this situation occurring.
