Act 3 Scene 1

Characters: Banquo, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, an attendant, 2 murderers

Location: A room in the palace

Events: Banquo expresses his fears that Macbeth murdered Duncan and begins to wonder whether the Witches’ prophecies to him will also come true. Macbeth asks him where he intends to ride this afternoon. Checking that Fleance will be riding with Banquo, Macbeth sends everyone away and considers his fears about  Banquo. Tormented by the Witches’ prophecy that Banquo’s descendants would be kings, Macbeth determines to take action. He reminds two murderers of an earlier coversation in which he had proved that it was Banquo who persecuted them. Convincing the Murderers that Banquo has been their enemy, Macbeth asks them what kind of men they are if they are willing to put up with it. Explaining why he cannot simply have Banquo exectuted, Macbeth convinces the Murderers that Fleance has to die too.

Quote: “The moment is on ‘t, for ‘t must be done tonight…Fleanance his son, that keeps him company, whose absence is no less material to me than his father’s, must embrace the fate of that dark hour. Resolve yourselves apart; I’ll come to you anon.

Discussion: Anon= at once, we’re coming.
